Op-ed: 3D or not to 3D- Virtual Me

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Questions about movies aren't about substance or talent these days. Instead people are debating whether or not their film should be in 3D.

Here's a clue: I don't want my movies to reach out and touch me.

I want to be entertained. I want to be transfixed. I don't want to be slapped, banged, and hauled around.

Don't get me wrong, 3D technology can be fun. Disney features, theme park rides, etc.

However, when I go tot he movie theater and sit with my drink and popcorn in hand, I don't want to wear my concession stand goodies.

So this op-ed is short: give the audience a choice. do a screen in regular and 3D. One might be more popular than another but at least for us traditionalists, we'll be able to spend our money in the market place too.

Reviews - The Vampire Diaries Premiere

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

3 out of 5 shovels
Spooky, creepy, suspenseful the CW has set up a Gothic thriller before their hit: Supernatural. The only drawbacks seen are the Dark Shadows backdrop, subplot, and air. Stefen believes his lost love has been reincarnated: an Alaina - Kathryn connection. So, he comes back to the family home to live with his nephew (who Stefen calls Uncle Zack).

A century old and he's broodingly lonely. Sound familiar? Can't anyone love being immortal these days without being evil? Enter Damon (though evil), Stefen's brother. Let the love triangle begin. The feud between the brothers pits Alaina in the middle.

She has her own drama to deal with. Parents are dead from a car accident, but she was the lone survivor. Her brother uses drugs and alcohol to dull the pain. Her friends are jealous or psychic.

The differences between Dark Shadows and the Vampire Diaries are teenagers, dead parents, fog, journals, and crows. How the series will keep from being a soap opera and not a thriller is the question. Hopefully the writers will be as intelligent as Supernatural's arcs.

Or, a Twilight wannabe has just taken over this time slot. Or worse, Dawson's Creek . . . I mean Creep.

Twilight Saga News

Staff Writer: Samuntha Mackenzie

Filming on the third installment of Twilight, Eclipse, is set for August 17 in Vancouver. Breaking Dawn will begin soon afterward.

None of the previous directors will be back for a second round. Scheduling conflicts is the main reason. Though the comment made about Catherine Hardwicke is worrisome, a successful female director gets trashed as "crazy." Would a man? Didn't think so.

All in all, the franchise is set. Could we have a Twilight movie for the next three Novembers?

A Girlfriend for Rathbone

Staff Writer: Samuntha Mackenzie

With credits in upcoming features such as the Twilight saga and The Last Airbender, Jackson Rathbone might see his fan base grow. If you don't know already, he plays Jasper Hale in the tween flick(s).

In September, Jackson will attempt a different kind of character: a shady man. The movie has been compared to a loose adaptation of the Beauty and Beast concept. Jackson will be able to stretch his talents on film and behind the scenes.

The director of the film, Justin Lerner states that: "Jackson's going to play a morally complex character, a charming and dangerous lead, jealous and diabolical, where you're not going to know if you love him or hate him. That kind of complexity will be interesting for him to tackle. It's going to be a very dark and offbeat performance."

Casting is still ongoing. No IMDB exists yet for the film.

Girlfriend is being produced by Jackson Rathbone and his band mate, Jerad Anderson.

New Cover for New Moon

Staff Writer: Samuntha Mackenzie

Little Brown publishing company has revamped the cover of New Moon. Due out September 15th, the cover shows a sexier side to the novel.

But is it appropriate? Or just playing on the romantic dreams of tweens?

Fans will be sure to like the free poster they receive when they buy the new edition.

Supernatural Thursdays

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

The CW is looking to keep fantasy and horror king on their fall Thursday schedule. Shifting Smallville to Fridays, the network picked up the Vampire Diaries. Based on a book series, the Vampire Diaries taps into the Twilight craze.

Supernatural is a keen, sharply written and smart show. If the newbie diaries is tween fare, then the two shows may not mix well.

The four year veteran show deals with dark and convoluted issues on par with adult sensibilities.

We'll see how tween the Vampire Diaries really are. Well, anything that keeps us away from the terrible HBO series, True Blood, is welcomed relief.

Breaking Dawn Confession

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Rob Pattinson stated that he is "committed to starring in" the fourth book in the Twilight Saga. With Pattinson's busy film schedule, he does not know when the last installment will begin shooting. Right now, the British actor is visiting the Cannes Film Festival and doing his scenes in Italy.

The Twighlight Saga is complete. All four books will be made into movies. Fans should be happy with the news.

The Riskybusinessblog has the interview.

New Moon First Poster

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Fresh for fans-the New Moon poster! This image does underscore the love triangle set up in the book as Jacob tries to woo Bella while she mourns the pain of Edward's break with her.

Vampire versus werewolf for the affection and adoration of one human woman.

Exquisite.

Can't wait until November.

Twilight Actors Shut Out

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Well with the Saturn Award nominations out, fans wonder why some talents were left off the list.

Notable shut outs is the film: Twilight. Though up for Best Fantasy Film, the principles Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart did not garner any recognition.

Why? We ask.

Could this be Lord of the Rings syndrome? Don't recognize the series until the last film?

We have our suspicions. Perhaps the Academy is just waiting for more drama to make a nod. With three more books ready for imaging, maybe there is time left for the actors to polish off their roles.

No Prince in New Moon

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Los Angeles agent Nick Reed, who represents Ben Barnes of Prince Caspian fame, has confirmed that Ben is amused with the attention he has received from the rumors, but has not been contacted for the film.

The speculation was that Ben would play Aro an Italian vampire in Twilight's New Moon.

With filming beginning in a few short weeks, New Moon has many roles to fill. Aro being one of them.

The latest news is only that the cast hasn't seen the script yet, and some roles haven't been cast. Too bad the director, Chris Weitz, doesn't have the production in line. Even more so, we're disappointed Ben isn't in the film.

Eclipse Newz

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Twilight's third movie has a release date: June 30, 2010. The first one not to be released in the fall, Eclipse will be released on the July 4th weekend and without Chris Weitz as director.

Still questions remain: Who will replace Chris Weitz as director of Eclipse? Will the second and third Twilight movies be shot back to back? When will we learn the new casting for New Moon?

Fans await the verdict.

Or at least, we wait for a press release from some actor's agent with information about their client's acceptance into the franchise.

We're waiting . . . Hey, we have an email address: Write us!

New Moon Newz

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

It's official: the artwork for New Moon has been published.

Still not official is any casting news. We wait patiently for a face to place with the other characters.

Anyway, this artwork is our placeholder until the character posters are made available.

"The twilight saga" will still have a place in the title but not the main attraction. The subtitle header is for those individuals unaware of popular culture.

At this point, wouldn't that be cavemen without satellite?

New Moon Questions

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Twilight fans rejoiced when New Moon got greenlighted after a great box office take in fall and winter 2007.

But controversary struck when Director Catherine Hardwicke was replaced and new the Director, Chris Weitz, tried to recast Jacob. Soon we learned that Taylor Lautner would reprise his role and fans rejoiced.

There are a few more casting needs for New Moon. Will Dakota Fanning play Jane? Will Ben Barnes play Aro?

Filiming begins in March 2009 so fans should find out soon enough how the cast has been fleshed out, so to speak.

With a November 20, 2009 release, New Moon already has expectations to live up to.
