Reviews - The Vampire Diaries Premiere

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

3 out of 5 shovels
Spooky, creepy, suspenseful the CW has set up a Gothic thriller before their hit: Supernatural. The only drawbacks seen are the Dark Shadows backdrop, subplot, and air. Stefen believes his lost love has been reincarnated: an Alaina - Kathryn connection. So, he comes back to the family home to live with his nephew (who Stefen calls Uncle Zack).

A century old and he's broodingly lonely. Sound familiar? Can't anyone love being immortal these days without being evil? Enter Damon (though evil), Stefen's brother. Let the love triangle begin. The feud between the brothers pits Alaina in the middle.

She has her own drama to deal with. Parents are dead from a car accident, but she was the lone survivor. Her brother uses drugs and alcohol to dull the pain. Her friends are jealous or psychic.

The differences between Dark Shadows and the Vampire Diaries are teenagers, dead parents, fog, journals, and crows. How the series will keep from being a soap opera and not a thriller is the question. Hopefully the writers will be as intelligent as Supernatural's arcs.

Or, a Twilight wannabe has just taken over this time slot. Or worse, Dawson's Creek . . . I mean Creep.

In Victorian London, the handsome Dorian Gray (Ben Barnes) is swept into a social whirlwind by the charismatic and cunning Lord Wotton (Colin Firth). Immersed in the hedonistic pleasures of the city, Dorian vows he would give anything to keep his youth and beauty - even his soul. Based on the Oscar Wilde novel,
Dorian Gray examines the destructive power of beauty, the blind pursuit of pleasure and the darkness that can result from both.
