Jedi Eclipse Book Review

Staff Writer: DL Mullan

3 out of 5 Shovels
New Jedi Order, Agents of Chaos II: Jedi Eclipse

The fifth book in the New Jedi Order series finds the New Republic on the verge of extinction. Resources and morale are at an all time low in the galaxy as the invaders continue their merciless attack on the galaxy.

Leia assists with evacuations and refugees. Luke tries to keep the Jedi together with one singular focus. Han is still seeking revenge and ends up in the middle of a desperate battle.

Working alone, the three heroes try their best to keep the New Republic from falling under the Yuuzhan Vong control.

More victories lie ahead for the alien invaders as the New Republic falters from the lack of coordination and leadership the galaxy needs to defeat this new enemy.

This work of fiction could better serve the series if the characters would hold true. Not many believe Han would dessert his family because of his recent losses, at least without a reference.

The novel was interesting and touched on many historical and personal remembrances in times of war, but the reader keeps waiting for a better evolution to this series.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

Staff Writer: DL Mullan

4 1/2 out of 5 Shovels

A dream sequence opens the film as Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) at the age of ten sails on a ship with her father, the Governor, to the Caribbean Fort in Port Royal on the crossing from England. Soon enough, Elizabeth sees a parasol floating on the water than a boy about her same age. Upon calling the attention of the crew the boy is brought aboard just in time to see the merchant vessel in flames.

Waking but for a moment the two children exchange introductions. Passing out again the boy is in Elizabeth's care, as such she notices the pirate's medallion around his neck and hides the trinket from the crew. Curiously Elizabeth glances toward the ocean to see the ghostly ship of the Black Pearl sailing away into the unknown. With that, Elizabeth wakes with a start and brings out the medallion from a secret compartment in a bureau drawer. Taking the medallion with her to the ceremony for the Commodore, she faints in her new dress and lands in the ocean below the fort.

The medallion calls to the Black Pearl where the ship returns that night to reclaim its gold, but not before the pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), saves Elizabeth from the ocean, is arrested, escapes, and confronts Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), the boy who was saved from the merchant vessels eight years prior.

The pirate captain is again caught and put into a jail cell awaiting his execution in the morning, however the Black Pearl comes for its bounty. Pirates raid the settlement of Port Royal, taking Elizabeth and leaving with their gold. Will doing his best to fight the pirates is rendered unconscious, upon his waking he boldly makes a stand to find Elizabeth but is turned away by the Commodore and the Governor. Will then goes to the jail to enlist the assistance of Captain Sparrow. Following Sparrow, the two commandeer one vessel, the Dauntless, to trick the fleet to giving him another, more speed worthy vessel, the Interceptor.

Unable to catch the pair, the Commodore watches Sparrow and Turner sail away with a ship of the fleet in his sabotaged vessel. Next the two comrades go to Tortuga to find a crew and then speed off to rescue Elizabeth, but not before Will discovers he is the son of a pirate. Unsure of his feelings, Will is mired with hatred for pirates and the actions of becoming one in order to save his childhood love. Then the real fun begins . . .

What a ride! Love this movie. This film was the best of the summer. Johnny Depp should get an Oscar for his performance, well at least a Golden Globe. He was fantastic. Orlando and Keira are the newest tag team in a wave of a "British Invasion." Orlando with the Lord of the Rings films and Keira with Bend it like Beckham and Love Actually, these two actors' stars are rising fast with the talent to back their box office lurability. Not to mention Orlando is handsome and Keira is beautiful. Last but not least, Geoffrey Rush is the best villain on the high seas. AHRRrrgh! Apple anyone?

DVD-

Of course, I will be watching this DVD with several not-to-be-missed extras including 19 deleted or altered scenes, a blooper reel, and a script scanner until the next adventure is released. Read along the movie and see what lines were changed or omitted. The extras are great and easy to use for instance: Audio Commentaries from Cast and Film Makers. Change your appearance with the Special Effects Studio. A history of Pirates and the Disney attraction are included along with the Producer's Photo Gallery, Scene Progression, Image Galleries, Story Board Viewer and more. This set comes with two separate DVDs for all the swag that's aboundin' on them for your treasurer chest.

I, Jedi Book Review

Staff Writer: DL Mullan

4 out of 6 Shovels
I, Jedi

This novel is about the development of the latent Force powers in the Rogue Squadron's fighter pilot, Corran Horn. His wife Mirax has disappeared during a mission for the New Republic. Corran is desperate to find her before he can never find her again.

Corran Horn joins Luke Skywalker at the Jedi Academy to learn how to use his Jedi powers. Then Corran goes off into the unknown to find his wife. Though the story lacks many of the more popular Star Wars characters, the author makes the novel worthwhile to read.

As outsiders, we learn how Jedi training is taught and learned. We get a real sense of the Force and the Jedi's thoughts throughout the process.

This novel displays the best of writing: character, plot, and experience.

Reviews - Supernatural S5 Premiere

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

4 1/2 out of 5 shovels
Supernatural has done it again. Great action, suspense, secrets, and humor seems to typify this series. This season we venture into hell. No, literally.

"Life as an angel condom." Dean states as he learns of his fate. Don't you just love him?

But the angels have other plans for Sam and Dean. Luckily, Cassius saves the day. Thank God.

This series gets better with each season. Good planning, scripts, and cast. Keep up the awesome work!

Warehouse 13 Review

Staff Writer: Samuntha Mackenzie

3 1/2 out of 5 shovels
Syfy Channel's new show Warehouse 13 is a mix of Friday the 13th: the Series, Special Unit 2, and the last part of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Lost Ark showed how the government took dangerous objects and filed these items in a large warehouse.Special Unit 2 dealt with strange creatures and technology plus the show had a woman and man buddy team. Friday the 13th had cursed objects.

Warehouse 13 combines the best of these series. Though the series has to grow into its arc, Warehouse 13 could be a great addition to the summer lineup.

Review - Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray

Staff Writer: DL Mullan

4 1/2 out of 5 shovels
As with many of today's literary classics, the product is either ignored or shunned. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde was shunned, a critical flop, for its themes of homosexuality and other scandalous interludes. Wilde in the next year revised the story by deleting some scenes, reworking dialogue, and adding six chapters of background.

The novel itself seesaws back and forth between action and narration. At the time, Victorian audiences would have been satisfied. Modern times seek to see more interaction between the characters instead of reading description. His dialogue seems more like a script or play then a novel. Actions and observations are sprinkled into conversation. Wilde did maintain a healthy balance between the senses and the reader is left wanting to know more about Dorian Gray's world.

Upon having Basil Hallward paint his portrait, Dorian Gray meets Lord Henry Wotton. Harry, as he is called, shows the innocent and beautiful Dorian another world. With a book Harry gives him and personal lectures, Dorian begins his indulgent lifestyle.

In the coming years, Dorian doesn't age no matter his sin. He continues to ruin ladies and gentlemen as well as himself. One day the madness he craves and creates overwhelms him. In a fit of rage, he destroys the painting and himself.

This classic faustian tale educates the reader on the indulgent vices of life. Just because no one can see your aging, withering soul does not mean your soul isn't paying the price for your sins.

In addition, perchance, Oscar Wilde tells us something more important: evil never ages, never spoils, never reveals itself readily. Humans are predators, sometimes preying on their own kind. What if The Picture of Dorian Gray is not just a morality play but a story about the advantages true evil has? Evil hides in plain sight and we must be on guard against, in his take, a pretty face.

Many adaptations have followed. An opera, movies and plays have taken The Picture of Dorian Gray into the mainstream.

Another stab will appear in theaters this autumn as Ealing Studios has filmed: Dorian Gray.

Cast includes: Ben Barnes, Colin Firth, Ben Chaplin, Rebecca Hall, Fiona Shaw, and Rachel Hurd-Wood.

Tin Man Ain't Your Mother's Oz

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

3 out of 5 shovels
The 2007 miniseries again was shown on Scifi Channel today. The re-imaging of the Wizard of Oz takes a different path then the black and white version with Judy Garland.

Synopsis: "Dorothy Gale, a.k.a. DG, is all grown up and bored. She mopes around, works as a waitress, and goes to school part time. Before she knows it she's back in OZ (a.k.a. Outer Zone) and on the run from the evil sorceress Azkadellia and her storm troopers and clumsy bats. Along the way she falls in with some strange characters including the brainless Glitch, Raw, a cowardly and psychic lion-man hybrid, and, in the largest deviation, Wyatt Cain, a cowboy cop from Central City called a "tin man" because of his tin badge."

Sounds like a good view on a Sunday afternoon, however the Tin Man dragged. The writers contrived subplots in order to kill time. At 270 minutes, this miniseries could have done the job in half the time.

The missing pieces seem to be the heart and brains of the quartet. Dorothy appears dense and rebellious. The Tin Man is not heartbroken enough. Glitch and Raw are wasted characters and actors. If this miniseries is called Tin Man, then perhaps the focus should be on that character.

What kept the audience tuning in was the acting skills of Zooey Deschanel and Neal McDonough. Zooey has a bright spark to her eyes. Neal brings a redeeming quality to his character.

Cast includes: Zooey Deschanel, Neal McDonough, Alan Cumming, Raoul Trujillo, Kathleen Robertson, and Richard Dreyfus.

Let Me Have Some Easy Virtue

Staff Writer: DL Mullan

4 out of 5 Shovels
A Noel Coward play from the 1924 comes to life in this rendition of Easy Virtue. The polish added to transfer a play to film was a treat. Slick, dry humor in a few throw away lines as well as the characters' sharp quips kept tempo with the feel and mood of this contemporary spin. The undertones spoke volumes about rich sensibilities and the down to earth goddess that rocks their country lifestyle.

Though hesitant about Jessica Biel across from great film notables such as Kirsten Scott Thomas and Colin Firth, her performance entertained and surprised me. I enjoyed her clumsy slapstick, romantic interludes, and understated dissatisfaction. The war between her character, Laurita, and the mother-in-law, Veronica, is priceless. Without an energetic performance from Biel, the battles would not have been the same.

As a protective, over-bearing, and stressed out mother, Veronica tries to control her two daughters and son, John, by any manipulative means necessary. Her power even casts a heavy hand over her husband. Thomas is a joy in this role. She gives the audience a love-hate relationship with her uptight character.

Colin Firth plays her detached husband, Jim. A warn-torn hero who doesn't feel like a hero, Firth gives his character a dark dimension under the silent struggle to remain a part of his dysfunctional family. Though seen in his eyes, the ex-soldier rather die then keep up appearances one more day. For peace's sake, he does try while repairing a motorcycle in his private den.

John, a lovable panda of a man, is innocent and sweet. He loves life, but when he brings his new American bride home, his world begins to unfurl. Ben Barnes gives a sympathetic and wistful performance as the boy-man. The melodies that he fills the house with soon become hushed in an emotional torrent of becoming a man, keeping his boyish humor, loving his wife, and staying true to the changing times around him.

With the addition of the two head-case sisters, Hilda and Marion, misunderstandings abound. The unending conflict leads to the disintegration of John and Laurita's relationship. John is unable to discern where his loyalties lie and Laurita has experienced what links someone will go for another. She doesn't see a glimpse of that affection from her new husband.

Laurita for the boundless love she feels, she also knows right from wrong. In the end, a dance separates Laurita from the country and invites her into the wind. With positive assertion, she takes herself back to the racing circuit with a wing, prayer, painting, and someone else who is along for the ride.

As the movie progresses from the musical beginning, the more serious overtones become apparent. Easy Virtue seems campy at first but metamorphoses into a beautiful butterfly. And if you like 20's style music, I hear there's a soundtrack with Ben Barnes, Jessica Biel, and Colin Firth lending their voices to some tracks.

As a period piece, Easy Virtue fits right in with our genre theme. Think fantasy. But don't be fooled. It's a humorous and dramatic comment on the state of humanity's pride and prejudice.

Easy Virtue opened in England November 2008 (DVD available in that region) and will open in American theaters beginning May 22, 2009 in limited release.

Repeat 17 Again

Ghost Writer: Amy Lockheart

3 1/2 out of 5 shovels

Ever had one of those lives which you make all the right decisions, but end up regretting them all? Mike O'Donnell spends his days aging and blaming his wife for him not going to college.

Then something happens. He's seventeen again. He can make his dreams come true. But Mike cannot stop meddling in his family's affairs. In the end, he learns he would make the same decision again. He loves his family, no matter the bad twenty-year attitude.

Funny at times, the film felt weighed down by the father's dark emotions and daughter's angst. More lighter moments would have been great.

Cast includes: Zak Efron, Matthew Perry, Leslie Mann, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Melora Hardin.

DVD to be released on August 11th.

Wolverine Movie Review

Staff Writer: Samuntha Mackenzie

4 1/2 out of 5 Shovels
With all the excitement about X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and its subsequent upload to the Internet, a movie like this one is usually adequate. Wolverine was better then anticipated. Though well thought out and executed, the last quarter of the movie lagged.

The film itself showed the metamorphose of James Logan, aka Wolverine from sickly child in 1845 to the eternal solider and then to a content lover. Logan began to loathe war and blood whereas his brother reveled in it. Teamed up with other mutants, the brothers were invincible.

Yet Wolverine did not like what his brother turned into: an immoral killing machine. He left the team and his brother behind. What he found as a logger was peace. What he found in love was solace.

But his former commander had other plans. Stryker baited and hooked Wolverine into a vicious game.

Now non-comic book readers understand Logan, his amnesia, and his skeptic's heart.

What was not conveyed was Gambit. Non-comic book readers will scratch their heads. What was his power? How did it work?

A couple loose ends tied up. A few left in the wind. Perhaps the next installment (Magneto) will give fans a little more.

Angels and Demons in the House

Staff Writer: Samuntha Mackenzie

3 out of 5 Shovels
Again, Professor Robert Langdon has found himself embroiled in another sinister plot with religion. Last time we left him, the Professor solved the mystery of Mary Magdelon's tomb. This time the Professor must stop a madman from taking over the Catholic Church.

Sound simple? Not in the least. The film is a mixture of action, adventure, horror, thriller, and mystery. Twist and turns in the plot make the audience dizzy with anticipation and disbelief.

With the Davini Code, the novel written after Angels and Demons, the plot is smooth and precise even if convoluted and unpredictable. The first novel installment, but second movie, Angels and Demons is more about confusion then an underlying need to find the truth.

Angels & Demons could have been epic like the Da Vinci Code-asking the hard questions, instead the film goer's just lookin' for the popcorn refill.

Let the Right One In Review

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

4 1/2 out of 5 shovels
Oskar and Eli have become friends. Yet Eli has a dark secret: she is a vampire.

Tranquil, subtle, dark, creepy, violent, affectionate- are all words that describe this film. Let the Right One In is subtitled in English but loses none of its sincerity or emotion.

Both twelve each has their own demons to battle. Eli has to feed on humans. Oskar has to avoid being eaten by humans. Bullies torment him.

Unlikely friendship between the strong and weak, each learns the value of strength and vulnerability. Friendship soon kindles into love.

This movie should be on the top of every vampire movie lover's list.

Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans

Staff Writer: Samuntha Mackenzie

4 1/2 out of 5 shovels
In this prequel to Underworld and Underworld 2, Rise of the Lycans refreshes the franchise.

Though most of the movie is dark and gloomy, Lucian and Sonja's love brighten the Shakespearen drama. Romeo and Juliet conquer adversity and diversity only to have one perish and the other wage a war for the ages.

Underworld 3 has a quality the other two films lacked: passion. Action and violence were the center of the other movies. This film centered on the relationship between two star-crossed lovers that led to action and violence. A much better combination of factors.

The script was livelier, less derivitive and repetitive. I like a jaunt on the wild side as anyone else, but good lines are essential for every character, or filmmakers run into the gambit of campiness.

Luckily, Rise of the Lycans avoided many of its predecesors pitfalls.

3 1/2 out of 5 shovels
Jump back! Steve Martin returns as the clumsy Jaque Closteau. We won't want anyone to get hurt while he is solving his next big parking case!

In this second outing, the Inspector is as hilarious as ever trying to find the Tornado jewel thief. After a string of thiefs, an international team of investigators is brought to France to solve the mystery.

Campy and silly, this film is the for the kid in all of us. Don't take the world too seriously and everything will fall into place; including love.
