Op-ed: 3D or not to 3D- Virtual Me

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Questions about movies aren't about substance or talent these days. Instead people are debating whether or not their film should be in 3D.

Here's a clue: I don't want my movies to reach out and touch me.

I want to be entertained. I want to be transfixed. I don't want to be slapped, banged, and hauled around.

Don't get me wrong, 3D technology can be fun. Disney features, theme park rides, etc.

However, when I go tot he movie theater and sit with my drink and popcorn in hand, I don't want to wear my concession stand goodies.

So this op-ed is short: give the audience a choice. do a screen in regular and 3D. One might be more popular than another but at least for us traditionalists, we'll be able to spend our money in the market place too.

Disney Grab Bag

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Disney is buying out the competition. From children's book clubs to comics? That's right, Disney is making a play to corner the market.

"Disney has acquired the kid-focused virtual world of Club Penguin in a deal totaling $700 million: $350 million cash and the chance to earn out $350 million more between now until 2009."

“This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,” said Robert A. Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company.

Disney's acquisitions might shed some light on the Narnia franchise's demise. Disney needs the capital to buy these other outlets.

If this is so, Disney might have made a mistake letting Narnia go. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader may compete with the Prince Caspian box office. An adventure story versus a war story may attract more family viewers.

We'll have to wait and see in December 2010.

Silent Wave of Control

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Since Wolverine was leaked out onto the web, one person received the ax- well, claw, in the public forum. That is until lately.

In the back channels of the Internet, a silent wave of reprisals have been waged against free movie and television show providers. As a follow up to our: Wolverine Download Scandal, OHG investigates how big business rules our lives.

In recent years, conglomerates the world over have been asserting their rights via lobbyists, payoffs, and laws over us: the consumer. To push back against the attacks, a few surfers have used their programming talents for the people.

Rights, you say? Copyright, you espouse? Think how many times the Copyright Laws have changed in the last decade alone. Have the changes protected you or I? No. Think: Mickey Mouse. A cartoon character who should be in the public domain, but is not.

Download a movie or song from one of the "legal" providers. You'll soon discover you don't own the song like you once did. You now "lease" the property. Anything you do that does not conform to the law, could wind you up in jail.

Have you downloaded the movie or song to another computer? Have you tried to burn the item to cd or dvd? Have you tried to break free from the chains?

Then you've probably have broken the law.

Go ahead check the term of use or agreement on what you download. You'll see fast: you waste a lot of money on stuff you'll never own.

There are reasons people don't lease vehicles. We like a sense of ownership. It's our money. Let us own a part of our cultural hertiage.

Write your Congressperson and demand equal protection from the predatory corporate interests under the law! Perhpas it's not too late.

Pirates of the Uber Sequel

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

Ahoy! Maties! Another installment of the popular Pirates of the Caribbean is in development. According to Johnny Depp anything is possible at this point in reference to story lines and characters.

Though criticisms have been levied at the franchise for "overly complicated" plots, this comedy and error subterfuge is what made the movies great. Will Jerry Bruckheimer and his creative team dumb down the next installment?

I hope not. Without the miscalculations and slapstick, what fun would a pirate movie be?

Fox in the Narnia House

Staff Writer: Grave Digger

A week before Christmas 2008, Disney backed out of their deal with Walden Media to produce the third installment of the Narnia franchise.

The Chronicles of Narnia: the Voyage of the Dawn Treader was saved by Fox. The company has worked with Walden Media in the past and now into the future.

The cast and director were kept intact by this move: Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes as well as the director Michael Apted. Our favorites return when filming begins sometime in summer of 2009 in Australia.

The expected date of release is Christmas of 2010 which is a far better date then earlier in the year: May of 2010. The film will now not be competing against Iron Man 2 and other major Hollywood releases for which curtailed the earnings of Prince Caspian (which was an excellent movie, btw).

Princess of Thieves

Staff Writer: DL Mullan

4 out of 5 Shovels
Gwyn is the daughter of the most famous hoodlum in history. Her father is Robin Hood. But her fire and rebellious nature simmer under the surface. She ready to fight. She ready for action.

Robin quells her. He doesn’t realize Gwyn is impulsive. Just like him.

Just as King Richard succumbs to death, Prince Phillip is on his way to the throne. Prince John could succeed to King if Phillip is eliminated. Add the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, Friar Tuck, Froderick, and Merry Men and the fight begins.

Keira Knightley, Malcolm McDowell, Del Synnott, Stuart Wilson, Crispin Letts, Roger Ashton-Griffiths, Jonathan Hyde, and Stephen Moyer are believable as characters from centuries past.

This film is a good live-action Disney flick. Comic book violence and innocent romance are a part of this movie, but so is the relationship between father and daughter.

At 88 minutes and a PG rating, this movie is good for the underage crowd.
