The first novel of Christopher Paolini is a culmination of several stories in book and film. Some terms could have been changed for more originality, but were not. For instance, the evil Empire is reminiscent of Star Wars.

An orphaned boy name Eragon finds an egg while hunting illegally in the King’s forest. The blue egg hatches and becomes a dragon. But the King senses the dragon and his henchmen are dispatched. Eragon’s guardian, his uncle, is killed. The town storyteller protects Eragon and teaches him the ways of the Rider. Along the way to the safety of the Varden, the rebel force set against the evil King, Eragon encounters friends and foes, heartache and pain as well as companionship. His world is opened up and turned around. The dragon, Saphira, becomes his confidante and connection to a larger universe where magic exists.

In unguarded moments, the story engages the reader. The relationship between Eragon and Murtagh is understated but realistic. Most impressive scenes were between these two characters. Mature interpersonal concepts for a young writer to write, still were thoughtful and well expressed.

This book was a long but interesting read. The themes of friendship, brotherhood, and oppression resonate with the audience.
