Exiled from his country, Ahmad ibn Fadlan encounters a group of Viking men. Although he is appalled by the northerners behavior, ibn Fadlan decides to join them on their quest.

A film about mythology, monsters, and courage has feeling and drive. However, the 103 minutes could have been edited better and longer. Aspects of characters and subplots seemed to be missing. With an R rating, the movie is graphic in its use of violence.

Antonio Banderas is convincing as the outsider. His character is uncertain and ambiguous until he sees the danger people are in. He learns about terror through the use of disguise and subterfuge.

The support cast feels real. Omar Sharif amazes no matter what character he assumes. European actors Vladimir Kulich, Dennis Storhøi, Daniel Southern and Neil Maffin create a realistic world in this action, adventure fantasy epic.

Don’t watch this film for a great movie. Watch this film for the mythology and wonderful acting.
