Away We Go
Verona (Maya Rudolph) and Burt (John Krasinski) are an unmarried couple in their thirties who are expecting their first child. They live in Denver close to Burt's parents since Verona's parents had past away. They thought their life was going great until they found out that Burt's parents were leaving the country for two years and would not be there for the birth of their grandchild. Verona and Burt decide to go on a road trip and travel around the U.S. and Canada to find the perfect place to live to call home and bring up their child. They travel to Phoenix, Tucson, Madison, Montreal and Miami, where they either have relatives or friends living. Along the way, they are also looking for the perfect family as a role model for them to follow in raising their daughter. As with all new families, they discover their own way. The film treads a balance between humour and pathos, and a lot of credit must be given to the two leads for supplying ‘Away We Go’ with its emotional anchor. This is a beautifully understated “indie” road movie in the manner of Sideways, and was selected to open this year’s Edinburgh Film Festival.

Dorian Gray
When a strikingly beautiful but naïve young Dorian (Ben Barnes) arrives in Victorian London he is swept into a social whirlwind by the charismatic Henry Wotton (Colin Firth), who introduces Dorian to the hedonistic pleasures of the city. Henry’s friend, society artist Basil Hallward (Ben Chaplin) paints a portrait of Dorian to capture the full power of his youthful beauty and when it's unveiled Dorian makes a flippant pledge: he would give anything to stay as he is in the picture - even his soul. Dorian's wild adventures continue, but soon he notices that his portrait, which is now locked away in the attic, has taken on an evil and disturbing air, while his own beautiful face goes unmarked by his deeds. Forced by his own evil actions to flee the country, Dorian returns twenty-five years later. To the surprise of his old friends, he looks exactly the same but he's jaded, having found pleasure but never happiness and he's haunted by the monstrous painting in the attic. His fear and paranoia grow as rumours of his past misdeeds circulate. Will Dorian get one last chance for love and redemption and more importantly, will he escape with his life? Oscar Wilde’s classic is a well crafted adaptation, and a handsomely mounted period thriller, with strong characterisations from all 3 male leads.

Separate Tables (1958)
The first of 2 filmed versions to compliment the current Chichester Festival Theatre production. Terence Rattigan's pair of one-act plays are deftly woven together into this intelligent, handsome drama, a kind of sombre ‘Grand Hotel’ of lonely and repressed lives at a British seaside hotel in the dreary off-season. David Niven and Wendy Hiller earned well-deserved Oscars for their subdued turns. Also starring Burt Lancaster, Rita Hayworth and Deborah Kerr. Separate Tables (1983)
Of particular note here is Alan Bates, an actor who is able to convey a full-range of emotions. Julie Christie is equally brilliant, using her radiant beauty to stunning effect in the first play, and abandoning it in the second (quite bravely, for a woman and actress known for her legendary face) This is, in the end, filmed theatre, and the viewer feels as if he is actually sitting in front of the stage. While not taking anything away from the fine 1958 film version, this theatrical version makes a fascinating comparison. Large screen DVD presentation in the STUDIO (limited seating capacity)
